What is Amazon Tree Mortality from Drought-Fire about?
This study provides evidence that drought-fire interactions can cause abrupt increases in tree mortality in Amazon forests. Researchers conducted a large-scale experiment with annual and triennial burn regimes in Amazon forests. During a severe drought, they found 226-462% increases in fire-induced tree mortality, along with sharp declines in canopy cover (23-31%) and aboveground biomass (12-30%). The drought also favored invasion by flammable grasses across forest edges, where fires were most intense. Duri
