Recently, VAn 1TERSOn et al. (1964) discussed the relationship between flagella insertion and the site of tellurite reduction in Gram negative bacteria. Azotobacter was excluded from this discussion however, due to the presence of membranous inclusions within the cell. This paper deals with the relationship between flagella insertion, membranous structures and tellurite reduction in Azotobaeter. At the same time a re-examination of the fine structure of this organism was undertaken using a micro-colony embedding method with which many of the difficulties usually encountered when embedding bacteria for electron microscopy were overcome.
