The Comprador in China the springboard for his social, political, and cultural activities. With the increase of China's foreign trade after 1842, the need for a commercial middleman became urgent. Yet the difficulty of the language and the complexity of the currency, coupled with China's great variety of commercial practices and social customs, proved major impediments to free and direct Sino-foreign transactions.
