What is Aquatic Birds about?
ParasiticDiseasesof MajorTaxa Macroparasite infections in aquatic birds are common and most often incidental; substantial parasite burdens may contribute to morbidity and mortality. Mites, lice, cestodes, trematodes, and nematodes are most often detected in some species Forrester and Spaulding, 2003). Ectoparasites Ectoparasites include nasal leeches (Theromyzon spp.) in the nares, nasal sinuses, or tracheal lumen of some duck species. Affected individuals may have discharge from nares, cloudy corneas, and/or globe collapse . Chewing lice, Mallophaga spp., and mites may be evident on feathers; the latter may also infest the subcutis and nasal cavity. Chiggers can cause dermatitis. Myiasis may occur in nestlings and adults of some species . MetazoanParasites Eustrongylides and numerous ascarids can be in segments of the alimentary tract, especially in piscivorous aquatic bird species (e.g. Eustrongylides ignotus in the ventriculus of Ciconiiformes; Eustrongylides tubifex in esophagus and proventriculus of mergansers; Figure .1). Abnormally high nematode load or aberrant parasite migration are rare, but may cause morbidity and mortality due to gastrointestinal perforation or rupture,
