Shortly thereafter, an aging black activist claims to be the gunman and demands to be arrested and tried for the crime. U.S. Attorney Marshall Jackson is assigned to try the case, but he quickly suspects that the activist is a patsy and that there's more to this case than the powers-that-be want exposed. The book suffers from a couple of plot holes; for example, if so many people were involved in a conspiracy this big, how long could it stay secret? These are minor qualms, however, for this is a diverting tale of suspense, and Hardwick scores some telling points on issues of race, the media, and conspiracy theory in fin de siecle America.
