Current transformers (CTs) must be installed by trained electricians or technicians. Only Instrument-type CTs with a low Safety Factor may be used. Under no circumstances may the secondary circuit of a CT be opened when current is flowing in the primary circuit. The voltage in the primary winding can reach several thousand volts in a fraction of a second if the secondary circuit is made open-circuit.
