What is Correspondence in the British Journal of Anaesthesia from 2018–21: article types, authorship, and COVID-19 about?
EditordThe coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic radically disrupted medical practice, research, and publishing. The volume of manuscript submissions increased dramatically in the early months of the pandemic, driven by COVID-19 related research papers, clinical reports, and opinion pieces. 1 However, women may not have participated fully in this publishing boom owing to increased home commitments, such as caring for sick relatives and home-schooling children. 2,3 The British Journal of Anaesthesia (BJA) publishes some of its research, clinical, and opinion submissions as correspondence. The aims of our analysis were to compare correspondence in the BJA published in 2018 and 2019 (pre-COVID-19) with correspondence published in 2020 and 2021 (post-COVID-19), correspondence with men first authors and women first authors, and correspondence on COVID-19related topics and non-COVID-19-related topics. All correspondence published in the BJA in 2018e21 was included. We recorded the number of authors, name, gender, and country for each author, and the UN geoscheme classification and World Bank Classification for each country. Authors were coded as man, woman, or unknown gender accor
