Can I read The surface hardening of X-irradiated NaCl on EtoBox?
The surface hardening of X-irradiated NaCl by E Aerts; S Amelinckx; W Dekeyser is a Engineering article available to read on EtoBox.
What is The surface hardening of X-irradiated NaCl about?
The increase in Vi&em hardness due to exposure of N&l single crystals to 40 kV unfiltered X-rays is studied both as a function of irradiation time and of depth, i.e. the distance from the surface facing the beam. The optical absorption was also measured, as a function of these variables, on the same crystals in order to find a possible correlation between hardness increase and colour centre concentration. The effect of optical and thermal bleaching was also followed. It is found that the hardness near to the surface is influenced by the presence of a free surface; when thin specimens are used an increase in hardness is found on both surfaces. All observations can satisfactorily be explained if the surface hardening is assumed to be due to the formation of small colloids. The hardening is then quite similar to precipitation hardening in an alloy. The formation of the colloids is analogous to the "printing-out" process in silver bromide exposed to light.
