Cavity walls consist of two separate walls, or "skins", separated by an air space. Early cavity walls had a 50mm cavity between the two half-brick leaves. Modern cavity walls are typically 265-275mm thick with a 60-70mm cavity. Cavity walls provide advantages like reduced heat transfer and acting as a damp barrier. However, filling the cavity with insulation poses risks like moisture crossing to the inside or cold bridging. Proper construction and drainage of the cavity is important.
