What is Fluorescence Quenching of Aromatic Amines by Chloromethanes about?

The fluorescence quenching of indazole, 5-amino and 6-aminoindazoles and 2-aminofluorene by dichloro-(CH,Cl,), trichloro-(CHCl,) and tetrachloromethane (CClJ have been studied in cyclohexane, acetonitrile and methanol as solvents. The quenching rate constants for this process have also been obtained by measuring the lifetimes of the fluorophores as a function of quencher concentration. For CC14, the quenching rate constants depend upon the viscosity, whereas in case of CHzClz and CHC13, quenching rate constants are neither the function of viscosity nor solvent polarity. Linear plot is observed between log k, and free-energy change in the quenching mechanism for k, < IO" M 1 s -'. This suggests the formation of complex involving a charge transfer interaction between the electronically excited fluorophores and the ground-state chloromethanes.
