This study analyzed ancient DNA from eight individuals excavated from the El Portalón cave in Spain dating from 5,500-3,500 years ago. The genomes show these early Iberian farmers emerged from the same ancestral population as other early European farmers, with some mixing with local hunter-gatherers. Compared to other early European farmers, these individuals showed the greatest genetic affinity to modern Basques, suggesting Basques may be linked to the spread of agriculture.
