What is Faulkner's Discourse : An International Symposium about?

The present volume is the outcome of an International Faulkner Symposium which took place in June 1987 and was hosted by the University of Bonn. It continued a series of conferences held by a group of European, American and Japanese Faulkner specialists in Paris, Salamanca and Izu(Japan). While the previous symposia were concerned primarily with thematic issues,* this one focused on Faulkner's Discourse, on the process of communication as manifested in his narrative language. As this topic attracted an amazing number of promising paper proposals, we allowed the richness of the theme and the diversity of critical methods to influence the shape of our program. I am pleased to be able to say that the wide range of approaches to one specific area of interest has remained the distinctive feature of this volume. I have rearranged the papers under new headings and hope that the organization of the book will prove helpful and add to the enjoyment of the individual papers.
