When Cu-Ni alloys are slowly cooled, concentration gradients form due to the slow diffusion of atoms in the solid state. This results in a "cored" microstructure with regions of different chemical composition. Specifically, the outer dendrite arms have a different composition than the inner regions. To eliminate coring, homogenization heat treatments are performed to accelerate solid-state diffusion and produce a homogeneous structure.
