What is Correlated anatomical and physiological studies of the growth of the nervous system of amphibia. XI. The proliferation of cells in the spinal cord as a factor in the individuation of reflexes of the hind leg of amblystoma punctatum, cope about?

The earlier studies of this series deal with the development of the embryo from the time of earliest somatic movement till locomotion by swimming is acquired. During this period the behavior pattern is an integrated unit, and the structural development of the nervous system is such as to maintain this integrity through the growth of functional neurons. Meanwhile, however, there are no functional ap- pendages ; the external gills and the fore limbs are mere rudiments, and the hind limbs are imperceptible. Nevertheless, the individual has acquired the ability t o change its position in space speedily, and it may, so to speak, seek and find new environment-an accomplishment of far-reaching importance. I n its resting position, however, the individual has no ability to resist gravity: it lies always on its side. My earlier work, accordingly, shows that up until locomotion is established, all somatic behavior is a perfectly integrated tot,al pattern without any separable functional com-The author's earlier articles of this seriea have been published in this journal,
