What is Monetary Theory and Practice : the U.K. Experience about?
There are, perhaps, four main components of my job, as follows: 1. Monitoring, assessing and forecasting the development of the monetary aggregates, i.e. monetary analysis. 2. Policy discussion and advice. 3. Monetary research. 4. Maintaining two-way communication with monetary analysts (both academic and other) outside the monetary authorities. ## Monetary analysis The core of my job in the Bank has been to interpret and to analyse monetary developments as they occur. By 'monetary developments' I mean primarily the quantitative movements in the monetary aggregates and their credit counterparts. Other officials have the responsibility for interpreting conditions in the various financial markets, e.g. the gilt market and the money market. This analytical function is inevitably and properly closely connected with a role as monetary forecaster, since an analysis of factors causing current monetary movements has obvious implications for prognosticating future trends. Currently such assessment and forecasting take place over two separate horizons, in different formats and with somewhat different data bases.
