In 1999, prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drug abuse accounted for 3% of all treatment admissions reported. Nearly half (46%) of the 44,000 admissions for prescription and OTC drug abuse were for prescription narcotic drugs. Admissions were most likely to be white (87%) and male proportions varied depending on the type of drug abused. Admissions for tranquilizers and sedatives were more likely to be female, while admissions for prescription stimulants and OTC drugs were more likely to be male.
