About this document

WSM vs LSM: Key Design Differences by Pritha Das is a document available to read on EtoBox.

The working stress method (WSM) is an elastic design method where stresses are kept below yield limits. The limit state method (LSM) is a plastic design method where stresses can exceed yield limits. Key differences are that LSM considers ultimate loads, serviceability, and uses partial safety factors while WSM uses safety factors and average material values. LSM designs are generally more economical due to utilizing the full moment-rotation capacity of members.
