What is Freya Stark: Pioneer of Middle Eastern Exploration about?
Freya Stark was a British explorer and writer who travelled extensively in the Middle East in the early 20th century. She received her first formal education at the School of Oriental Studies in London and worked as a nurse in Italy. Stark learned Arabic while travelling alone in Lebanon in 1927. Her book Valley of the Assassins about an ancient Muslim sect won a gold medal from the Royal Geographic Society in 1934. She spent over 12 further years travelling and writing about the Middle East.
