What is Collagen for Drug Delivery Applications about?
Advances in polymer science have driven the field of drug delivery systems and tissue engineering. Appropriate comprehension of polymer properties is essential in the design and development of novel drug-delivery systems. Many natural and synthetic polymers are used as a medium for the delivery of drugs. Among these polymers, natural biodegradable polymers find widespread use as they can be degraded into nonharmful fragments in the body. This chapter highlights the role of collagen, a biomaterial that has been widely tested for its applications in drug and gene delivery and tissue engineering. Collagen forms the main component of structural component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) [1]. It is found throughout the connective tissue and the skin, where its main role is to provide mechanical support and structural strength necessary for its function. The unique shape and properties with regard to its structure are determined by its triple-helical α-domains. Collagen constitutes nearly 25%À35% of total body proteins, and till date, 13 types of collagen have been isolated, that differ in helical length, nature and the non-helical portion [2]. The most important property of using colla
