Egg shells are composed mainly of calcium carbonate, which can be extracted and used as a natural flocculant in water treatment. Calcium carbonate from eggshells can be converted to calcium oxide by heating, then to calcium hydroxide by adding water. Calcium hydroxide effectively neutralizes charged particles in water, causing them to aggregate into larger flakes that are more easily removed by filtration.
