He was charged with rebellion, sedition, and illegal association based on documents and witness testimonies. Rizal argued that he could not be guilty of rebellion as he advised others not to revolt. However, the military court accepted the evidence against Rizal and ignored his arguments. On December 30, 1896, Rizal was convicted and sentenced to death by firing squad.
