First edition of a chronicle of the city of Aquila, Abruzzi, in Italy, founded by Conrad, son of Emperor Frederick II about 1250 as a bulwark against the power of the papacy. ‡b Aquila maintained itself as an almost independent republic until it was subdued in 1521 by the Spaniards who had become masters of the kingdom of Naples in 1503. The chronicle ends with the construction of the massive citadel by the Spanish viceroy don Pedro de Toledo in 1534. The city's art treasures include the church of San Bernardino di Siena, with its fine Renaissance facade by Nicolò Filotesio, and the church of Santa Maria Collemaggio which contains the mausoleum of Pope Celestine V constructed in 1507
