Eukaryotic cells have organelles enclosed within membranes that allow specialized functions. The nucleus houses DNA and is surrounded by a nuclear envelope. Other organelles include the endoplasmic reticulum for protein synthesis, Golgi apparatus for packaging proteins, mitochondria for energy production, lysosomes for breaking down materials, and peroxisomes for fat breakdown. Eukaryotic cells are found in the kingdoms of animals, plants, fungi, and protists.
