What is Symmetrical Components in Power Systems about?
For a balanced three-phase system, symmetrical component analysis results in only positive sequence voltages and currents. For unbalanced systems, such as an open-phase fault, positive, negative, and zero sequence currents will exist. Similarly, a single phase to ground fault produces positive, negative, and zero sequence currents and voltages, while the voltages remain balanced. Symmetrical component analysis can be used to calculate all sequence components from phase voltages and currents.
