This experiment determined the purity of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid or ASA) through indirect titration. A 0.1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution was standardized against a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. The HCl was then used to back titrate a solution of aspirin that was hydrolyzed with excess NaOH.
