Virginia Woolf was an English novelist and essayist born in 1882 who was one of the foremost modernist writers of the 20th century. She wrote the well-known novel To the Lighthouse. Woolf suffered from mental illness and committed suicide in 1941, leaving a note to her husband explaining that she could no longer recover from her disease and did not want to continue spoiling his life.
