Chronicles the attitude of the West German Evangelical Church in the immediate postwar years to Jews and the Holocaust. Describes the failure of Church organizations to recognize the special needs of "racially persecuted Christians". Reports on seminars of the Deutscher Evangelischer Ausschuss für Dienst an Israel (organized by Karl Heinrich Rengstorff) which progressed from a missionary mentality to genuine dialogue; on refusal to deal with Christian-Jewish relations at Church congresses; on missionary societies; on the proceedings of national and provincial church synods and the pronouncements of leading churchmen. Under pressure from the World Council of Churches, the German Church issued successive confessions of guilt; but these did not specifically mention the persecution of Jews. Many churchmen understood the Holocaust to have been God's judgment on the Jewish people. Only in 1950 did the Synod issue a "Declaration of Guilt toward Israel" which was relatively free of anti-Jewish theology and which urged the churches to combat antisemitism.
