What is Editorial about?
The embryonal, or 'primitive', tumors of the central nervous system (CNS), while not an uncharted territory in neurooncology, present a number of problems in respect to their identification, cytogenesis, and classification (1). These problems largely arise because, in the CNS of higher species, it is reasonable to postulate that the proliferative capacities of the cell populations at risk for neoplastic transformation are at their peak at the time of brain development and that in the mature brain the turnover of these cells is low. Thus the distinction that usually separates embryonal tumors from tumors derived from the stem cells of renewal which normally proliferate in the adult organ may be hard to draw in the CNS. How to tackle, in this context, the resulting difficulties of tumor classification is being debated at this time. Briefly stated, discussion springs from attempts to resolve these difficulties by having all cerebral neuroepithelial tumors containing embryonal cell elements consolidated into a single entity ('primitive neuroectodermal tumors'), without consideration for their site of origin, and having this category subdivided simply according to whether the tumor cell
