stroyed by the pathogen. Foliage of infected plants becomes stunted and chlorotic, resembling symptoms of nitrogen deficiency (Fig. 6). Infected plants are more prone to winter injury and heaving and may be slow to resume growth following harvest or winter dormancy. ## Causal Organism Aphanomyces euteiches is an oomycete plant pathogen that requires wet soil conditions for optimal infection and disease development. The optimal temperature for growth of this pathogen is 24-28°C. ## Aphanomyces Root Rot Aphanomyces root rot most commonly occurs in slowly drained soils and is easily confused with other root health problems associated with wet soil. The pathogen frequently stunts and kills seedlings but may also cause a chronic root disease of established plants. Aphanomyces root rot can significantly reduce alfalfa productivity. The disease is commonly associated with Phytophthora root rot, with which it often forms a disease complex in slowly drained soil. Aphanomyces spp. that infect alfalfa are reported to occur in many countries, including the United States, Canada, France, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand. Alfalfa varieties are available with resistance to Aphanomyces root rot.
