Gudbrand and his wife Marit decide to sell one of their cows to get more money. When Gudbrand takes the cow to market, nobody buys it. On his way home, he trades the cow for a horse, then the horse for a goat, the goat for a sheep, the sheep for a goose, the goose for a cockerel. Getting hungry on his long walk, he trades the cockerel for food at an inn. Through a series of exchanges, Gudbrand transforms the unwanted cow into a meal at no cost.
