The puerperium refers to the period immediately following childbirth, usually the first 6 weeks. During this time, the uterus and reproductive organs return to their non-pregnant state. The uterus undergoes involution, decreasing in size by about 1-2 cm per day until returning to its normal non-pregnant size of less than 100g by 6 weeks postpartum.
