學習和研究訓古首先遇到的一個問題是:什麽是訓古?從訓古學史的角度而言,要想對訓古二字作出恰當的解釋,恐怕得花費很多的筆墨,因為前人對訓古這個術語理解所做出的解釋,平不完全一致。要想梳理詳說,折衷已意,確實三言兩語所能了結。 訓詁學可以有廣義和狹義之分。廣義的訓詁學包括音韻學和文字學,狹義的訓詁學只是小學中與音韻、文字相對的學科。 懂得了什麽是訓古,則訓古學的意思也就可以思過半了,訓古學不過是在訓古二字的後邊加了個「學」字而已。總言之訓古只是感性的,個別分析的,訓古學則提高為理性的綜合整理的,它能使許多零碎的訓古知識帶上條理性和系統性。
