What is The Results Obtained about?
While the present investigation was mainly designed to assess the effect of gold therapy in the treatm ent of rheum atoid arthritis, it also embraced trials of combined therapy with hormone-gold and hormone-Salazopyrin. The available literature on gold treatm ent is first reviewed. It appears that m any authors have obtained good results with gold therapy, but as some re searchers have reported rather unfavourable findings no unanim ity has been reached. The effects of gold treatm ent were studied in a series of 502 patients, and an other series of 362 subjects mainly given routine physical therapy was used for control purposes. The patients were followed up for varying lengths of time but in no case for less than 3 years after the beginning of the first course of treat ment. The two series were for practical purposes equivalent in respect of age and sex distribution.
