What is D41. SMOKING HEALTH EFFECTS - Interactions between Cigarette Smoke and Plutonium in Lung Cancer. about?

Lung cancer risk from inhaled radioactive particles is of interest regarding environmental and industrial accidents and potential radiological terrorism. Smoking is known to act synergistically with radon in causing lung cancer in miners, and to retard particle clearance from the lung. Retarded clearance of radioactive particles would increase cancer risk by increasing radiation dose, but we questioned whether non-clearance-related synergisms might also occur. Male and female F344 rats were conditioned to cigarette smoke (CS), exposed once by inhalation to plutonium-239 dioxide ( 239 PuO2) to simulate accidental exposure, exposed to CS for lifetime, and examined for lung tumors. Rats were exposed whole-body 6 hr/day 5 days/wk to mainstream smoke from 1R3 research cigarettes diluted to 98 or 244 mg total particulate matter/m 3 , or to clean air as controls. After 6 wk, one-half of the rats were exposed nose-only to 1.0 mm 239 PuO2 to deposit 250 ng (0.5 kBq of radioactivity), or sham-exposed. Survival, cumulative lifetime doses of radiation, and lung tumor incidence were evaluated. Both 239 PuO2 and CS alone increased the incidence of lung tumors. CS increased radiation dose by slow
