## Summary Hayek spoke of the “errors of sociobiology” though he was very much a Darwinian. The reason is that he thought many of the institutions of the Gesellschaft could not be explained directly by conclusions drawn from the observations of animals: the market, money, or the law were not natural, nor were they rational. They emerged as novelties of cultural evolution, a process that is much faster than, and partially independent of, biological evolution. Modern man’s discontent with civilisation can only be explained by that unnatural character of many of its institutions.
