What is Methanol Production from Syngas about?
As the population grows, the need for energy increases over time. In the last century, most of the energy was supplied from fossil fuels due to their high-energy density and good storage. These fossil fuel sources are not renewable and therefore are limited. Nowadays, moving toward sustainable development is a great challenge. A good alternative is methanol, which is used in various applications and is a multipurpose-based chemical. Methanol is a sustainable and clean resource that can be produced from either traditional or renewable sources such as natural gas and biomass, respectively. In addition, there is no carbon-carbon bond in its structure, and it has more hydrogen; therefore, it is cleaner than other energy sources when it burns. The fact that methanol is liquid at ambient temperature makes favorable ease in its storage and transport. Methanol is mostly produced from syngas that is usually converted from methane reformation. Another desirable carbon source is CO2, which its accumulation has a destructive effect on the environment. This chapter examines an overview of different feedstocks including natural gas, CO2, and biomass and the production processes of methanol and t
