What is Hesiod about?

The Muses, daughters of Zeus, teach Hesiod poetry while he watches his sheep. They give him a laurel staff and breathe divine inspiration into him. The Muses tell Hesiod to sing of the gods and of themselves. When the Muses speak to mortals, they can both tell lies and speak the truth, so it is uncertain what should be believed. Hesiod portrays himself as a shepherd, likely because the Muses address him as a "rustic shepherd," and shepherds were seen as unintelligent and lazy.
