What is Linear Algebra for Everyone (The Gilbert Strang Series) about?
Description Table of Contents, Preface Gilbert Strang's earlier books introduced an idea-the four fundamental subspaces-that has had widespread success in linear algebra education. The relation of the column spaces and null spaces of A and A^T leads students to a Big Picture view of linear algebra. Linear Algebra for Everyone takes another important and memorable step, starting in Chapter 1. The goal is to understand an m by n matrix A of rank r. For a small matrix of integers, students can go left to right and identify r independent columns. The result is expressed as A = CR = (m by r)(r by n): a column-row matrix factorization. The independent columns go into C. R combines those columns to give all columns of A. This teaches matrix multiplication, rank, column space, and more. R turns out to be the reduced row echelon form of A without any zero rows. The row space and null space come directly from R, and A = CR is the key. One goal of this fast start is to reach eigenvalues and positive definiteness and singular values. Compressing a photograph is made feasible. The final chapter looks ahead to deep learning-a resource that students can carry forward. Video lectures r
