In this beautifully written biography of place is the complete story of one of the Pikes Peak region s most stunning sites. The account begins with the area s geological origins and tells the story of recently discovered dinosaur tracks, marine fossils, and archeological evidence of early humans on the open space. In addition to its spectacular rock formations, Red Rock Canyon s rich and diverse wildlife ecology is described in full, along with the land s contemporary history following the arrival of the white man in the American West, the colorful story of the Bock family who owned the property for eighty years, and its final preservation as public open space by a group of dedicated volunteers who pitted their wits against powerful development interests to save the land for the benefit of the entire community. Also included is the subsequent acquisition of two additional historic parcels making Red Rock Canyon even larger than its more famous sister park, the Garden of the Gods.
