His Ph.D. thesis was on general relativity. In June 1970, after working at two other organizations, he joined The John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL). At JHU/APL he became recognized as an international expert on wave propagation (acoustic, electromagnetic and seismic).
