What is Regional Anesthesia for Major Abdominal Surgery in Pediatric Patients about?
Abstract Major abdominal surgery in children is optimally managed with a multimodal approach with the goals of reducing opioid use and its associated side effects, providing high-quality analgesia, and promoting faster recovery. Multimodal anesthesia includes some form of regional anesthetic block, either central neuraxial or truncal, wound infiltration, pharmacological interventions, and non-pharmacological techniques. Although for many providers epidural analgesia remains the gold standard, its potential for devastating complications remains a concern. Development of new and accessible nerve blocks and improved ultrasound technology has increased the focus on non-neuraxial regional anesthesia techniques in pediatrics. Recent large registries have confirmed the safety of regional anesthesia in children, but more research is needed to determine the mechanisms of action, effectiveness, and safety profile of the newer regional anesthesia techniques.
