This Memoir by the great Unionist leader covers the twelve years during which he was a member of Gladstone's second and third Cabinets and which saw the struggle with the Land League in Ireland, the 'Kilmainham Treaty', the Phoenix Park Murders, the Battle of Majuba Hill, the bombardment of Alexandria and the occupation of Egypt, the dispatch of General Gordon to the Sudan and his death at Khartoum, the passing of the Reform Act of 1884, the campaign for the 'Unauthorized Programme' at the General Election of 1885, the 'Hawarden Kite', the first Home Rule Bill, the disruption of the Liberal Party, the 'Times Commission', the fall of Parnell, and the growth of the Unionist alliance. Apart from a chapter on the Kilmainham 'Treaty' compiled in 1882 and a final chapter added in 1892, A Political Memoir was dictated by Chamberlain in 1891, and has never previously been published in its entirety.
