What is Centering Culture and Decentering Race in Geriatric Mental Health about?

I n their comprehensive review and call to action, Jimenez et al. define a central challenge in psychiatry: how to remove the pernicious effect of racism from the diagnosis and treatment of vulnerable minority populations when institutional psychiatry, from diagnostic algorithms to care models, is built on the legacy of racism. Their review clearly identifies the sources and ramifying effects of racism on the mental health of older African Americans, Asians, and Latinos. Because the authors have developed and tested mental health interventions for minority populations, they are also in a good position to advise on strategies to combat such racism. The negative effect of racism for risk of mental illness is clear. As the authors note, "racism is associated with increased depression, anxiety, and psychological distress because it is an undeniably negative, demeaning, and threatening reaction to an immutable personal characteristic." It has more direct structural effects as well. Minorities face obstacles and exclusion in housing, education, income, and employment, leading to persistent intergenerational inequities in wealth, an important buffer for meeting challenges to mental health.
