In the paper a new method deriving a 2-D model of stressed plate is developed. The advantage of the method is that the 2-D model is derived directly from a 3-D model of elastic body without any simpli®ed assumptions, hypothesis. As a result, the method can be applied to both classical uniform homogeneous plates and non-uniform and/or non-homogeneous plates. It is demonstrated that the 2-D plate model describing the buckling can be derived from a 3-D linearized model of stressed body. The new method derives the terms incorporating initial stresses in 2-D model from asymmetry of coecients in constitutive equations of 3-D stressed body.
