Irving set out on an expedition through the American West after the success of his early works, which inspired three books including A Tour on the Prairies, providing easterners their first description of life in the region. Later in life, he worked diligently on a biography of George Washington despite poor health. Considered the first true American writer, Irving sought to encourage future generations of writers through his own work and advocating for stronger copyright laws.
