The Continental Army faced extreme hardships during the winter of 1777-1778 while camped at Valley Forge. There was a lack of basic necessities like food, clothing, and shelter due to resignations in the quartermaster and commissary departments. Over 2,500 soldiers died from the harsh conditions and disease. There was also a growing rift between the civilian population and the Continental Army. Civilians did little to support the starving soldiers and some even profited from the army
