What is Afterword: on Words and Disciplines in Studying Humor about?
Intersections between humor and the law have intrigued me for a long time, so I am pleased to be contributing this post-scriptum to the Special Issue of Humor: IJHR on precisely that topic. As the SI's Editors so ably put it, there are many different ways in which these two important topics interact with each other and if we are to integrate them, an interdisciplinary dialogue is urgently needed. The present volume and its contents make a major step forward in that direction. Some years ago, my colleague Sharyn Roach Anleu and I pointed to three different such nexuses: laws that regulate humor; law and lawyers as the butt of humor; and how humor is used in legal proceedingsfor good or illthat is, humor as used or experienced by judges, counsel and witnesses, including inadvertent humor in court. Most of the present studies address the first of these three topics, dealing with the jurisprudence of humor and giving valuable insights by ranging over several different legal systems and historical periods.
