Phani Bhusan Chakravartti was the first Indian Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. He worked as a professor in Calcutta in the 1920s before becoming a judge in the Calcutta High Court in 1945. Chakravartti later became Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court in 1952. After another judge passed away in 1956, he also served as acting Governor of West Bengal for a few months. Chakravartti retired from the judiciary in 1958.
