About this document

Understanding Earthquakes: Causes & Effects by Ameya Mhaisekar is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Earthquakes occur along tectonic plate boundaries as the plates shift against or past each other. The spatial extent of shaking from an earthquake depends on its magnitude, with larger quakes affecting areas over 100 km from the epicenter. While difficult to predict precisely, earthquakes are more likely to happen in areas with active faults that have experienced quakes in the past. Most quakes last only a few minutes, though the effects can persist much longer depending on the magnitude and damage caused.
