What is Study of non-linear penalties in metropolitan DWDM transmission systems that employ directly modulated DFB laser transmitters about?
Experimentally verified simulations show that four-wave mixing (FWM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) in optical fibers do not produce significant non-linear impairments when chirped waveforms, derived from directly modulated laser transmitters, propagate through DWDM metropolitan systems. The result is explained through reduced interferometric noise at the bandwidth-limited receiver due to beating between the spectrally broad signal and corresponding FWM tones. Introduction of a novel low bit-rate probe simulation technique to separate noise from distortion in a bit sequence uncovers XPM (FWM) as the main non-linear degradation in systems running at 10 (2.5) Gb/s with tight channel spacings and relatively high input powers.
